What is EFT?  How do you do EFT?

Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) is an emotional healing process that involves tapping with the fingertips on some of the same points that acupuncturists may put needles. EFT is a kind of emotional acupuncture but instead of using needles you can tap on yourself with your own fingertips. The self-tapping on these “acupoints” stimulates the energy meridian system, and releases unwanted negative emotions as well as physical pain and discomfort.

According to foundational EFT theory, “The cause of all negative emotions is a disruption in the body’s energy system.” When you focus your thoughts on an emotional issue while tapping on the acupoints, you calm your body’s energy meridian system. (There is alot going on in your body and brain when you tap.  I love that scientific part, but find that what I know is more then most people want to hear.  I'm OK with that.  I won't bore you!  But for those of you who want to learn the "behind-the-scenes-science" just zip me a note.)  As a result of the focus of your thoughts and tapping, the impact of the negative emotional issue tends to lessen – or disappear completely.

Sounds deceptively simple, right?  And the best part is that IT IS SIMPLE!  Are you ready to learn the basics?  I'll teach you the shortcut method that I use with every client.  There are times when I use more than this lesson due to working on a tough issue.  But for the most part, this shorter version with alleviate most issues.

First, I want you to think of an issue that isn't too tough.  Don't go to the big, bad memories like abuse or trauma. Pick something that irritated you, like a slow cashier when you were in a hurry.  Or a maybe something that hurt your feelings like, a comment you heard.   On a scale of 1 - 10 this should be somewhere in the middle.   Now name this issue.  For example you may call it "The Cashier Incident."   It doesn't have to be fancy, but keep it simple.

The next step is to actually rate this incident on a scale of 1 - 10.  I know I already told you to keep it to an incident in the middle, but now I want you to actually define the number.  You need to know where you are starting.  How else will you know if you have a change?

Now you have a titled incident and a rating, so it's time to go to work learning where the points are and how to tap!  You'll tap 7 - 10 times at each point.  Tap gently, no need to bruise yourself.  This is not a case where more pressure is better.  This is a very gentle technique.  Just tap firmly enough to create a gentle vibration.

There are 2 points to tap for most of these, because you have 2 sides to your body.  You can tap on the left or right side - whichever feels more comfortable.  You can also tap both sides at the same time.  Some find that they are comfortable alternating tapping on both sides. This is a very forgiving technique.  Go with what's comfortable to you.

Here are the points:

Karate chop point:  The meaty side of your hands below your pinky fingers.  If you were to karate chop something, this would be the part of you hand that would make contact.

Eyebrow Points:   Follow your where the eyebrow bone curves towards your nose.  The point is at the 10 o'clock and 2 o'clock positions right on the bone.  I have found that if I tap right between my eyebrows about an inch above my nose I get the same good result and it's easier.

Side of Eye:  Follow the eye bone to the outside corner of your eye.  That's the place.

Under Eye:  Continue to follow the eye bone to the point below your eye.  The point is right on this bone.

Under Nose:  Above your top lip and below your nose.

Chin:  This is actually between your bottom lip and above your chin.  You are basically tapping on your lower gumline through this point.

Collarbone:  There is a center point to your collarbones. Feel that little dip like a "U"?  The points are on both tips of the "U."  To keep it simple I want you to tap as if you are knocking on a door.  But gently!

Under Arm:  For the ladies the point is where your bra strap goes under your arm.  For the men it is level with your nipple and under your arm.

Top of Head:  This is the crown of your head as it curves at the top toward the back of your head.  If you put your thumbs on your ears and join your fingers on top of your head, the point will be where your index fingers rest.

Let's put all this together now.  You have a titled incident and you have rated it from 1 - 10 and you know the tapping points.   Follow along by tapping the point I note and reading out loud with emphasis what I have written:

Karate Chop:  "Even though I have this (your titled incident) I still deeply and completely love and accept myself."  Repeat this statement 3 times.

Eye Brow: This (your titled incident)

Side of Eye:  This (your titled incident)

Under Eye:  This (your titled incident)

Under Nose:  This (your titled incident)

Chin:  This (your titled incident)

Collarbone: This (your titled incident)

Under Arm: This (your titled incident)

Top of head: This (your titled incident)

Check in with yourself.  Remember where your rating was when you started?  Where is it now?  Is it higher or lower?  Movement either way is good.  Keep tapping this same sequence until your rating is zero.

Now imagine how your life would change if you went though all the events of your life that are only a 5 on a scale of 1 - 10.  That would reduce your stress by half!  What a change!  And what if you did this for the events that are at 10?  The health benefits would simply mulitply.  Can you imagine how it would be to just wake up feeling good about your life?

This is how I help people de-stress.  This technique works better than anything I have ever seen.  It's like getting the elevated mood from antidepressents only with no bad side effects!  Your life is your choice.  Take control.  Lead yourself to happiness and joy!
